Reddit has closed down the Alt Right subreddit that reportedly had around 16,000 members. In a statement released to The Daily Beast by Reddit the online forum said:
“We have banned r/altright due to repeated violations of the terms of our content policy. There is no single solution to these issues and we are actively engaging with the Reddit community to improve everyone’s experience.”
This move has received backlash from members of the group as well as people who apparently had no ties to the group, some of which have gone to alternative social media to express their dismay at the group being closed down and a general confusion as to what part of the policy they had supposedly broken. Reddit touted privacy violations as the reason for shutting the subreddit down, accusing the group of leaking private information and phone numbers of certain politicians and people in power, a claim denied by the group.
